The donation by Elisabeth and Alain Clément of a collection of paintings, sculptures and gouaches on paper in 2024 complemented a collection already held by Carré d’Art – Museum of Contemporary Art.

Born in 1941 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Alain Clément chose the South of France as his home. Together with Tjeerd Alkema, Jean Azémard and Vincent Bioulès, he founded the ABC Productions group in 1969. Close to avant-garde movements such as Supports/Surfaces, he took part in the theoretical debate questioning the nature of painting but quickly moved away from formal rigour to give free rein to a form of expressionism.

He was a lecturer from 1977 to 1990 and director from 1985 to 1990 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nîmes.

The artist developed a long-standing body of abstract work situated at the intersection of compositional exploration, the sensuality of gesture and colour. His paintings, sculptures and prints combine visual pleasure, sensitivity and a strong sense of structure.

The body is present both as a subject and in the painter’s physical relationship with the space of the canvas. The painting gradually steps out of its frame to engage with architecture.

In 2024, he collaborated with the architects of the Nîmes Sports Hall on a large-scale installation.
